A distant swimmer in dark Pacific water at dawn

How to actually go

A practice

Five ways back. None of them require becoming a different person. They require leaving the house on a day that is not special, and staying long enough for the inland weather to leave the body.

01 · 40–70 minutes

Dawn water

In before the day has opinions.

  1. 01Leave the house in the dark. No radio. Let the temperature tell you that you are going west.
  2. 02At the sand, stand until you can see the first texture on the water. That is your weather report.
  3. 03Walk in to the waist. If you swim, keep the shore in sight. If you do not, stay until the cold is interesting instead of merely unpleasant.
  4. 04One paragraph in the tide log before coffee. Date, place, one true sentence. Then go inland.

02 · 2 hours

The minus-tide hour

Go when the water leaves. That is the appointment.

  1. 01Check the log the night before. If low is below +1.0 ft and falling through the morning, you are going.
  2. 02Shoes with grip. No bucket. No taking.
  3. 03Move slowly enough that you could describe one animal to someone who is not there.
  4. 04Replace every rock. Leave before the flood makes you hurry. Hurry is how things get broken.

03 · 60 minutes

No-gear hour

Keys, one layer, the rest is optional.

  1. 01Do not bring a plan that needs equipment. If you need a board, that is a different practice.
  2. 02Walk until the parking lot is out of earshot. Sit. Count ten sets. Do not narrate them.
  3. 03If you take a photograph, take one. Then put the phone away for the remainder.
  4. 04Drive home the long way if you can. Let the salt stay on your skin until the door.

04 · 20 minutes

Horizon sit

For the days you only have a glance.

  1. 01Pick a pull-out with a view: Point Dume bluff, the rise west of County Line, the promenade at Ventura.
  2. 02Engine off. Phone down. Face the water, not the camera.
  3. 03Stay for one full song of whatever is already playing in the car, or twenty silent minutes. Do not restart the car to skip the feeling.
  4. 04This counts. A return does not have to be a swim to be a return.

05 · A swim, or a long look

Look at the dark patch

The forest is still there if you bother to see it.

  1. 01From a bluff or a point, find the kelp: a darker, slower texture on the water, usually just beyond the break.
  2. 02If the swell is small and you are a competent swimmer, get in with a mask. Do not dive alone. Do not touch the holdfasts.
  3. 03If you stay dry, watch how the patch moves. It is not a stain. It is a forest in weather.
  4. 04Note it in the log: present, thin, or gone. That record is more useful than a mood.
