Arrive Empty
A practice for people who pack too much, including their own noise.
There is a version of going to the sea that looks like an expedition: wax, leash, two towels, a speaker, a plan. It is a fine way to surf. It is a poor way to return.
Arrive empty means: keys, one layer, shoes you can kick off. No photograph to get. No podcast for the walk down. The ocean is already doing the only interesting thing it needs to do. You are there to be in range of it.
This is harder than it sounds for people who live by lists. The empty hour feels unproductive, which is how you know it is working. Sit until the cold finds your ankles. Watch one set all the way through. If you swim, swim without a destination. If you do not swim, do not apologize to anyone, including yourself.
The footprint is enough. It will be gone by the next tide, which is also the point.
